A última vez que Galo e Águia se confrontaram, foi pelo Campeonato Mineiro de 1994, em partida realizada no Mineirão. Contando com o dia inspirado de Renato Gaúcho, que marcou 1 gol e deu uma assistência, o Atlético goleou a equipe de Patrocínio por 4 a 0.
O atual técnico do Grêmio, era o comandante do esquadrão atleticano que ficou conhecido como a “SeleGalo”, pois haviam grandes nomes vestindo a camisa Alvinegra, como Neto, Luís Carlos Winck, Éder Aleixo, Adílson Batista e Gaúcho, mas que não deixou nenhuma saudade no torcedor do Galo.
Na expectativa de ganhar títulos, o atleticano se frustrou com o ano vexatório do Galo de 1994. A SeleGalo não conseguiu transformar o sonho em realidade e terminou a temporada sem sequer ter conquistado o Campeonato Mineiro, terminando 10 pontos atrás do rival Cruzeiro na classificação final.
No entanto, na partida contra o Patrocinense, a SeleGalo fez bonito e não tomou conhecimento do adversário naquele 17 de abriu de 1994.
Com um toque de bola envolvente, o Atlético contou com os gols de Kanapkis, Eder, Renato Gaúcho e Reinaldo para fazer a alegria da Massa no Mineirão.
Renato Gaúcho foi determinante para a goleada Alvinegra. Foi o jogador que mais acertou passes e que mais finalizou na partida. Marcou um gol de pênalti e deu uma linda assistência para o gol de Renato.
