Clayton foi contratado em 2016, após ter sido considerado uma grande revelação do Figueirense, de Santa Catarina. O Galo arcou cerca de R$ 13 milhões na contratação, o que fez do atacante ser a 7ª maior compra já realizada na história do Atlético.
Após uma reunião que durou mais de 6 horas e que varou a madrugada, o anúncio da contratação do jogador veio com uma grande expectativa da torcida atleticana. Em um hotel da capital catarinense, Florianópolis, o presidente do Galo, Daniel Nepomuceno e do Figueirense, Wilfredo Brillinger, firmaram o acordo. O contrato foi de 5 temporadas.
