Geninho foi quem iniciou o ano do centenário no comando do Atlético, mas não resistiu a uma goleada sofrido para o rival na final do Campeonato Mineiro e a eliminação na Copa do Brasil para o Botafogo e foi demitido.
Na sequência, Ziza apostou em Aexandre Gallo, ex-jogador do clube, que ficou apenas 14 jogos no comando e foi demitido após uma goleada de 6 a 1 para o Vasco, no Rio de Janeiro, pelo Brasileirão.
A última aposta de Ziza foi em Marcelo Oliveira, também ex-jogador do clube. Após um mês da contratação do novo técnico, Ziza Valadares renunciou ao cargo e Alexandre Kalil virou presidente do Atlético. O mandatário atleticano não trocou a comissão técnica e Marcelo Oliveira comandou o Galo até o fim da temporada 2008.
