A partida do fim de semana será a 28ª entre os Alvinegros e o Atlético tentará vencer o time paulista pela 4ª vez em São Paulo. Até o momento, são 16 vitórias para o Santos contra 3 do Galo.
Para se ter uma ideia da dificuldade que é enfrentar o Santos longe de casa, é o período que o Atlético demorou para conseguir o primeiro triunfo sobre o adversário.
O primeiro confronto oficial aconteceu em 1964, em jogo válido pela Taça Brasil. O Galo acabou sendo goleado por 5 a 1, na Vila Belmiro.
O Atlético só veio vencer o Santos 32 anos depois, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro de 1996. Em partida disputada no estádio Sócrates Stamato, na cidade de Bebedouro, SP. O Galo venceu por 1 a 0.
A partir daí, mais um longo tabu se iniciou. Somente 12 anos depois, o Galo voltava a derrotar o Peixe longe de BH. Com duas vitórias por 3 a 2 na Vila Belmiro nos anos de 2008 e 2009, o Alvinegro conquistava seus dois últimos triunfos contra o Santos. Já são oito partidas sem vitórias contra o adversário no estado de São Paulo.
