Leandro Donizete deixou o Galo no final de 2016. Ele e seu agente não aceitaram a proposta do Atlético para renovação de contrato, que era de mais uma temporada. Dias depois, Donizete acertou sua ida para o Santos e com um contrato de 3 temporadas.
A vida do volante, porém, não teve o mesmo sucesso que ele teve no Atlético. Na reserva do clube paulista desde que chegou, Donizete não faz parte dos planos do Santos e o clube quer encontrar um novo destino para o atleta.
No Atlético, Donizete fez história. Disputou 231 jogos e fez quatro gols, sendo campeão da Libertadores, Copa do Brasil e da Recopa Sul-Americana. Além de 3 títulos mineiros.
