O clássico entre Atlético e Cruzeiro é disputado desde 1921, mas foi apenas a partir da década de 1950 que a rivalidade entre os dois começou a se destacar, sendo reforçada pela divisão da taça do Campeonato Mineiro de 1956.
O clube mais antigo e tradicional de Minas Gerais é o Atlético e ele teve como rival por muito tempo, o América, clube com o qual fazia o antigo “clássico das multidões”.

O Cruzeiro surgiu como o mais novo rival a tentar parar a hegemonia do Atlético em Minas, mas ele só tentou. O Atlético continuou soberano e é, até hoje, o maior vencedor de clássicos do futebol do estado.
O Atlético também é o maior campeão mineiro de futebol. Soma 44 títulos, contra 36 do Cruzeiro e 16 do América.

Nas semifinais, os atleticanos impuseram uma virada histórica sobre o Flamengo por 4 a 1 no Mineirão, após perderem por 2 a 0 no primeiro jogo. Já o Cruzeiro, empatou com o Santos na Vila Belmiro, após ter vencido por 1 a 0 em casa. Pela primeira vez na história, as duas equipes mineiras decidiram um título nacional.
