Na próxima quarta-feira, o Galo enfrentará o Santos, na Vila Belmiro, às 21h30, em jogo válido pela 31ª Rodada do Brasileirão. O Atlético terá que quebrar um longo tabu e o retrospecto ruim que tem contra o time praiano quando o assunto são os confrontos longe de Belo Horizonte.
Será a 33ª partida entre os Alvinegros no estado de São Paulo e o Atlético tentará vencer o time paulista pela 5ª vez. Até o momento são 20 vitórias para o Santos, contra apenas 4 do Galo.
Para se ter uma ideia da dificuldade que é enfrentar o Santos longe de casa, é só vermos o período que o Atlético demorou para conseguir o primeiro triunfo sobre o adversário. O primeiro confronto oficial aconteceu em 1964, em jogo válido pela Taça Brasil. O Galo acabou sendo goleado por 5 a 1, na Vila Belmiro.
O Galo só veio vencer o Santos 32 anos depois, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro de 1996. Em partida disputada no estádio Sócrates Stamato, na cidade de Bebedouro, SP. O Galo venceu por 1 a 0.
A partir daí, mais um longo tabu se iniciou. Somente 12 anos depois, o Galo voltava a derrotar o Peixe longe de BH. Com duas vitórias por 3 a 2 na Vila Belmiro nos anos de 2008 e 2009, o Alvinegro conquistava seus dois últimos triunfos contra o Santos no estádio.

Pela Copa do Brasil do ano passado, o Atlético enfrentou o Santos pelas oitavas de final. Após empatar o primeiro duelo em 0 a 0 em Belo Horizonte, o Galo precisava da vitória para evitar os pênaltis. Com o jeito Atlético de ser, o Alvinegro não deu sorte ao azar e venceu o time praiano por 2 a 1, de virada, e quebrava um tabu de 10 anos sem derrotar o adversário em solo paulista.
VITÓRIA EM CUIABÁ – MATO GROSSO
Em 2014, o Atlético derrotou o Santos como visitante. A partida aconteceu no estado de Mato Grosso, no estádio Pantanal, que foi construído para a Copa do Mundo. Com dois gols de André, o Galo venceu por 2 a 1, de virada.
