Sem oportunidades no time principal, o atacante quer jogar mais e por isso, Alexandre Gallo, diretor de futebol do Atlético, pretende contar com o atleta por empréstimo. Os dois trabalharam juntos nas categorias de base da seleção brasileira.
Leandrinho chamou a atenção do clube italiano quando foi artilheiro do Sul-Americano de 2017 com 8 gols em 8 jogos. O Brasil foi campeão. No Mundial, a seleção ficou pelo caminho, mas o atacante também mostrou bom futebol. O suficiente para convencer os dirigentes napolitanos a contratá-lo.
