A Copa Ipiranga é disputada desde 2006, mas era denominada como Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20. No entanto, em 2015, o contrato entre a Federação Gaúcha de Futebol e a CBF terminou, e a partir daí a competição passou a ter o nome de Copa RS.
O Atlético foi vice-campeão em 2009, perdendo a final contra o Grêmio e em 2015, perdendo a final para o São Paulo.
Nesta temporada, os times se enfrentam em turno único na primeira fase, dentro de seus grupos, avançando para as quartas-de-final os dois primeiros colocados de cada chave.
O Galinho está no grupo C, junto com River Plate, da Argentina, Palmeiras, Toluca, do México e Vasco da Gama.
