Será o 4º mata-mata na história entre Santos e Atlético e o Galo leva desvantagem. O Alvinegro jamais conseguiu eliminar o Peixe e agora tentará dar o troco no rival.
O primeiro mata-mata aconteceu em 1964, pela Taça Brasil. Pelas quartas de final, o Atlético perdeu o primeiro jogo por 4 a 1 e depois foi goleado novamente, desta vez no Pacaembu, por 5 a 1 e deu adeus à competição.
Dezenove anos depois, os times voltaram a se enfrentar em um mata-mata. Pela semifinal do Campeonato Brasileiro de 1983, o Galo perdeu a primeira partida por 2 a 1, na Vila Belmiro, e ficou no empate em 0 a 0 no Mineirão, sendo eliminado.
Já o último mata-mata aconteceu em 2010, na fase quartas de final da Copa do Brasil. Após um jogo eletrizante no Mineirão, o Atlético venceu o Santos por 3 a 2 na primeira partida, mas acabou perdendo por 3 a 1 no segundo jogo na Vila Belmiro e foi novamente eliminado.
Tanto em 1964, quanto em 2010, o Santos acabara sendo campeão dos respectivos campeonatos.
