O técnico Roger Machado fez várias alterações no time e surpreendeu a torcida. Danilo, Cazares e Otero, que vinham sendo titulares, começaram no banco de reservas. Marlone e Maicosuel foram escalados para iniciarem a partida no Horto.
O Galo começou fulminantes, criando várias oportunidades de gol, assim como foi no Mineirão, primeira partida. O gol só veio sair aos 36 minutos da primeira etapa. Marcos Rocha fez belo cruzamento pela direita e Rafael Moura subiu mais alto que a zaga para colocar o Galo em vantagem: 1 x 0.

Veio o segundo tempo e o Galo não perdeu o ímpeto. Criando muito, o Atlético chegou ao segundo logo aos 11 minutos. Robinho recebeu de Rafael Carioca e finalizou para a defesa de Juninho. Robinho pegou o rebote, tocou para Rafael Carioca e este serviu Marlone, que sofreu pênalti. Robinho cobrou e fez o segundo gol alvinegro: 2 x 0.
Roger colocou Otero, Cazares e Felipe Santana nos lugares de Maicosuel, Robinho e Gabriel. Muito participativo, Cazares entrou com fome de gol e criou várias oportunidades para marcar, mas contava com uma tarde inspirada do goleiro Juninho.
O gol que selou a classificação do Atlético para a final chegou aos 44 minutos. Marcos Rocha recebeu passe de Cazares e deixou Otero em ótimas condições para fazer o terceiro gol do Galo.
