Desde 2013, o Atlético não jogava na cidade. Apesar de ter enfrentado o Tombense duas vezes após o último jogo, as partidas foram disputadas em Muriaé e em Ipatinga.
O último confronto aconteceu pelo Campeonato Mineiro de 2013, ano mágico para o torcedor atleticano. Os torcedores de Tombos viu o Atlético por duas vezes, no intervalo de dois meses.
A primeira partida foi logo na estreia do confronto. Pela primeira fase da competição, o Atlético derrotou o Tombense por 2 a 1, gols de Ronaldinho Gaúcho e Réver. Depois os times voltaram a se enfrentar, desta vez pela fase semifinal do campeonato. O primeiro duelo foi na casa do Tombense, com nova vitória do Galo: 2 a 0, com gols de Luan e Leandro Donizete.
