Um ano depois de se enfrentarem no mata-mata da Conmebol, Atlético e Botafogo voltaram a se encontrar em um momento decisivo.
Pelas quartas de final do Campeonato Brasileiro de 1994, o Atlético enfrentou o Botafogo no Mineirão na primeira partida. Com o estádio lotado, o Galo não perdoou o time carioca e venceu por 2 a 0, largando na frente por uma vaga na semifinal do Brasileirão.
No jogo da volta, o Botafogo acabou vencendo por 2 a 1, mas não foi o suficiente para eliminar o Galo.
Na semifinal, o Atlético acabou sendo eliminado pelo Corinthians.
3º MATA-MATA – Copa do Brasil
O terceiro duelo em mata-mata veio em 2007. A primeira partida ocorreu no Mineirão e ninguém venceu. A torcida do Galo assistiu um 0 a 0 e o Atlético foi tentar a classificação no Maracanã.
Na partida de volta, o Atlético saiu na frente do Botafogo e como valia o critério gol marcado fora de casa, o Galo só seria eliminado se sofresse a virada do time carioca, e ela aconteceu. O Botafogo virou a partida para 2 a 1 e estava levando a classificação.
O ERRO HISTÓRICO
A partida se encaminhava para o final, mas aos 46′ minutos do 2º tempo, o Atlético teve um pênalti ESCANDALOSO não marcado a seu favor pelo árbitro Carlos Eugênio Simon.
Se fosse convertido, o placar seria 2 a 2 e o Atlético sairia do Maracanã classificado para a semifinal da Copa do Brasil de 2007.

Após ser eliminado pelo Botafogo na Copa do Brasil em 2008, o destino colocou o time carioca outra vez no caminho do Atlético no mesmo ano, desta vez, na Copa Sul-Americana.
Era o ano do centenário atleticano e o Atlético comemorava o fato de estar disputando uma competição internacional.
Como de costume, a primeira partida foi realizada no Mineirão e a torcida do Atlético voltou pra casa chorando. Impiedoso, o Botafogo goleou o Galo por 5 a 2 e praticamente assegurou a classificação do time carioca.
Na partida de volta, o Atlético foi derrotado outra vez. Perdeu por 3 a 1 no Rio de Janeiro e deu adeus à Sul-Americana logo na primeira fase.

Três anos depois da eliminação na Sul-Americana para o Botafogo, lá estava o Atlético outra vez enfrentando o time carioca na competição continental.
Mais algoz do que nunca, o Botafogo veio ao Ipatingão e derrotou o Galo por 2 a 1 na primeira partida. Já no jogo da volta, outra vitória carioca. No Rio de Janeiro, vitória de 1 a 0 sobre o Atlético e novamente a vaga era do time da estrela solitária.
7º MATA-MATA – Copa do Brasil
O sétimo e último encontro em mata-matas entre Atlético e Botafogo ocorreu em 2013. Campeão da Libertadores, o Galo entrou direto na fase oitavas de final da Copa do Brasil e chegou como um dos grandes favoritos ao título.
A partida de ida aconteceu no Maracanã e o Galo encontrou um Botafogo em boa fase, comandado pelo veterano Seedorf. O Atlético tinha Ronaldinho Gaúcho em seu elenco e o bruxo era a grande esperança dos atleticanos.
O Galo saiu na frente do placar, mas acabou levando a virada e foi derrotado por 4 a 2.
Na partida de volta, no Independência, o Atlético frustrou a Massa e não conseguiu derrotar o Botafogo. O Galo até tentou, mas acabou empatando com os cariocas em 2 a 2 e novamente foi eliminado da Copa do Brasil.
