O Botafogo é uma das maiores pedras no sapato do Galo na história do futebol brasileiro. Se olharmos o retrospecto do Atlético contra o adversário, levamos a pior.
Em duelos disputados no Rio de Janeiro, a dificuldade do Atlético aumenta ainda mais. Em 35 partidas disputadas contra o adversário, o Galo soma apenas 4 vitórias, tendo perdido 22 jogos em competições como o Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil, Conmebol e Sul-Americana.
A primeira vitória atleticana aconteceu há 47 anos e traz boas recordações. O duelo do dia 19 de dezembro de 1971, está na história do clube, pois foi o dia em que o Atlético se tornou o primeiro campeão brasileiro, após derrotar o Botafogo por 1 a 0, no Maracanã.
O segundo triunfo aconteceu 15 anos depois, mas é importante lembrar que nesse período, aconteceram apenas 3 jogos entre Galo e Botafogo. Pelo Brasileirão de 1986, o Atlético bateu o Botafogo por 4 a 2.
A partir daí, o torcedor atleticano teve que esperar um bom tempo para voltar a ver o Galo a vencer o time carioca no Rio de Janeiro, mas exatamente 33 anos ou 8 jogos.
O triunfo aconteceu no Campeonato Brasileiro de 1999, ano em que o Atlético foi o vice-campeão. A vitória veio com uma goleada histórica de 5 a 1.
A quarta e última vitória veio 13 anos depois. No Brasileirão de 2012, coincidentemente no ano em que fomos vice-campeões mais uma vez, o Atlético bateu o time carioca por 3 a 2, de virada, no Nilton Santos.
