Samuel, atleta que veio do Guaratinguetá, havia sido expulso na derrota para a Portuguesa por 3 a 1 na 17ª rodada da Série C de 2016. Cumpriu a suspensão automática na 18ª rodada, mas pegou duas partidas de suspensão. O atleta ficou devendo um jogo de gancho e deveria cumprir na primeira partida entre Náutico e Corinthians realizada no Arruda, no último dia 5 de abril. O atleta não foi nem relacionado, mas não por conta da punição e sim porque seu nome só foi publicado no Boletim Informativo Diário (BID) no dia da partida, situação que não lhe dá condições de jogo, já que a publicação precisa ocorrer ao menos na véspera da partida.
Samuel foi escalado na partida de volta, quando o Timbu venceu o Timão por 2 a 0, na Arena Barueri, e como estava suspenso a irregularidade foi caracterizada. Nas disputas de jogos das Séries A e B, existe um sistema que impede que isso aconteça, mas na Copa do Brasil sub-20 ainda não. O que o clube faz, o que é uma rotina nas contratações alvirrubras, é consultar a CBF sobre a situação do atleta. De acordo com Mauro Branco, o clube irá atrás dessa resposta e o departamento jurídico poderá utilizá-la como defesa.
O pleno do STJD irá se reunir provavelmente após o dia 11 de maio para decidir se o Náutico será reintegrado à competição ou se irá manter a eliminação do clube pernambucano.
Na 2ª fase, o Náutico enfrenta a Chapecoense, a primeira partida já foi realizada no Recife e houve empate em 0 a 0.
O Galinho já sabe que irá decidir a classificação fora de casa. A primeira partida das quartas de final será na Arena do Jacaré e a decisiva em Recife, contra o Náutico, ou em Chapecó, contra a Chapecoense.
