Foto: Centro Atleticano de MemóriaLá se vão 85 anos de muita história, uma história que daqui há 15 anos será centenária. Estamos falando da conquista do Atlético em 1937, conquista esta que sagrou o Galo como o “Campeão dos Campeões” do Brasil.
O torneio Campeão dos Campeões foi organizada pela Federação Brasileira de Football (FBF), que ainda em 1937 se incorporaria à Confederação Brasileira de Desportos (CBD). O campeonato foi criado para reconhecer o primeiro campeão nacional no Brasil através dos vencedores dos campeonatos estaduais do ano anterior.
PRIMEIRO CAMPEONATO PROFISSIONAL
O Campeonato Mineiro de 1936 foi o primeiro campeonato da era profissional do futebol mineiro. Vencido pelo Atlético de forma tranquila, com 9 vitórias em 12 jogos, além de uma goleada de 6 a 1 sobre o até então desconhecido Palestra Itália, o Galo sobrou no certame e foi o representante de Minas no primeiro torneio nacional do Brasil.
Na Copa dos Campeões de 1937, seis equipes de cinco estados participaram: Fluminense (campeão carioca de 1936), Portuguesa (campeã paulista de 1936), Atlético (campeão mineiro de 1936), Rio Branco (campeão capixaba de 1936), o Aliança (campeão campista de 1936) e a Liga Sportiva da Marinha (equipe convidada).
Disputado no mesmo molde do Campeonato Brasileiro atual (pontos corridos e turno e returno), a Copa dos Campeões foi realizada de 6 de janeiro a 14 de fevereiro de 1937.
O time atleticano tinha grandes nomes, como Kafunga, Guará, Zezé Procópio e Paulista, teve uma campanha de encher os olhos. Em seis jogos disputados, foram quatro vitórias, um empate e apenas uma derrota.

REPERCUSSÃO DO TÍTULO
A façanha do Galo também foi destaque fora de Minas Gerias. O Jornal dos Sports, do Rio de Janeiro, colocou em manchete, no dia 4 de fevereiro de 1937 (um dia após o Galo garantir o título) “Atlético Campeão dos Campeões”.
O Estado de Minas voltou a noticiar o Galo para os mineiros. Na última partida diante da Portuguesa (14/02), o jornal ressaltou a grande exibição do Atlético em solo paulista e o futebol da equipe “Exibição que surpreendeu o público paulista”.
Teve mais repercussão. Até revistas esportivas da época não falava outra coisa a não ser o feito do Galo.
CURIOSIDADE
A conquista épica do Galo ficou eternizada. Para sempre no hino oficial do clube, escrito por Vicente Motta em 1968, a quarta estrofe da letra foi reservada para exaltar o título nacional do Alvinegro “Nós somos Campeões dos Campeões”.
