No final do jogo, o Diretor de Futebol Rui Costa, anunciou a demissão do treinador.
“Vim aqui comunicar que, infelizmente, o Rodrigo não é mais treinador do Atlético. Tentamos, realmente, fazer algo diferente do que acontece no futebol brasileiro. Entendíamos que ele merecia, até pela forma como ele assumiu o grupo, como assumiu o trabalho, como desenvolveu seu trabalho, merecia um tempo para recuperar aquilo que já tinha demonstrado. Mas esse tempo não é mais suficiente porque aí começa a acontecer questões que extravasam a relação profissional, ou seja, você começa a afetar a pessoa física, o indivíduo e o grupo também. É por esse motivo que o Rodrigo deixa de ser treinador do Atlético. Agradeço o trabalho dele e a forma como ele sempre se comportou. Por mais profissional que eu seja, esse é um momento muito difícil na função que exercemos”, declarou o diretor.
Rui Costa também falou sobre o perfil que o clube irá buscar para o novo comando técnico.
“Não temos essa decisão de perfil estabelecida porque isso não estava sendo analisado dessa forma. Mesmo sabendo que o futebol é assim e que, a cada resultado ruim, o Rodrigo ficava cada vez mais em condição de fragilidade. Quem trabalha com futebol sabe que isso é sim, não tem outra forma de encarar isso. Vou conversar com o presidente, já conversei com ele agora e vamos fazer uma reunião amanhã, com a diretoria. Amanhã, já viajamos para enfrentar o CSA e teremos uma comissão técnica de caráter provisório, o Lucas Gonçalves permanece na equipe de trabalho. Ele tem um papel importante nisso porque conhece os jogadores, conhece todo o trabalho que vinha sendo feito. Vamos nos empenhar ao máximo para que esse profissional chegue o quanto antes porque, agora, para nós, cada jogo passa a ter uma importância transcendental. Vamos trazer um profissional que queira estar aqui conosco, que aceite esse desafio e tenha capacidade de identificar as qualidades que o nosso grupo tem, a coragem que esse grupo tem tido e resgatar o caminho das vitórias”, disse Rui Costa.
