40 anos de um dia triste no Mineirão: A história de um vice-campeonato que todo atleticano deveria conhecer

Há exatamente 40 anos, Belo Horizonte viveu um dia triste no futebol, particularmente os atleticanos. Foi em um 05 de março de 1978, que a capital mineira presenciou um fato inédito: o Galo se tornava o único clube a ser vice-campeão brasileiro de forma invicta.

Iniciado em outubro de 1977, o Campeonato Brasileiro daquele ano só terminou em 1978. O Atlético, com a dupla Cerezo e Reinaldo na equipe, fez um campeonato mágico, vencendo 17 das 21 partidas e chegou até à final sem perder sequer um jogo.

A caminhada Alvinegra naquele ano começou de forma espetacular. Foram 8 vitórias seguidas nas 8 primeiras rodadas. Isso tudo no período de um mês apenas. Nestas partidas, o Galo derrotou equipes como o Santos e venceu os dois clássicos regionais contra Cruzeiro e América.

O primeiro “tropeço”, se assim pudermos dizer, veio na 9ª rodada, quando o Atlético empatou com o Uberaba fora de casa.

Logo depois, mais um show do Galo. A equipe conquistou mais 6 vitórias seguidas, vencendo novamente o clássico contra o Cruzeiro, além de derrotar o Grêmio.

A estrela maior daquele time era o atacante Reinaldo, maior artilheiro da história do clube até hoje. Naquele campeonato, o Atlético marcou 40 gols em 21 jogos, só o Rei marcou 28 e foi o maior goleador da edição.

Líder mais do que nunca e apresentando o melhor futebol do Brasil, o Atlético se classificou para a semifinal da Brasileirão com facilidade.

Com partidas sensacionais diante do surpreendente Londrina, do Paraná, o Atlético venceu o primeiro jogo no Mineirão por 4 a 2 e empatou o jogo da volta por 2 a 2, chegando assim a final do campeonato.

O São Paulo por sua vez, bateu o Operário do Mato Grosso do Sul, com uma vitória e uma derrota na semifinal.

A grande final do Campeonato Brasileiro de 1977 seria em jogo único e como o Galo teve melhor campanha, ganhou o direito de jogar no Mineirão.

Empurrado por mais de 102 mil torcedores, o Atlético chegou à decisão com certo favoritismo. Azarão, conforme os próprios são-paulinos chamavam o São Paulo, fez uma partida não tão brilhante, mas o Alvinegro não conseguiu transformar a vantagem nas arquibancadas e no palco da partida para conseguir levantar a taça.

REINALDO SUSPENSO

Um dos episódios mais marcantes da final, foi a maracutaia da suspensão do Rei. Ele foi expulso injustamente, conforme o árbitro da partida Romualdo Arpi Filho reconheceu, bem no meio da competição, frente ao Fast Clube do Amazonas, em Manaus. Mesmo assim, o artilheiro do Campeonato Brasileiro e a maior esperança de gols do Galo para a grande final, tomou três jogos de suspensão e ficou de fora.

A FINAL

Após empate em 0 a 0 no tempo normal e na prorrogação, Atlético e São Paulo foram decidir quem seria o Campeão Brasileiro de 1977 nos pênaltis.

O adversário errou as duas primeiras cobranças. O Atlético errou a primeira e acertou a segunda. Mas a partir daí, o Galo errou todas as outras cobranças e o São Paulo acertou todas, vencendo por 3 a 2 e conquistando o título.

No final da jogo, todos os jogadores do Atlético saíram de campo abraçados e ao redor, um Mineirão inteiro chorando a perda de um título brasileiro pelo time que não não perdeu sequer um jogo.
